Drag
Kings
Before the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York
gave birth to gay liberation,
being in a lesbian
relationship generally meant one of the females
had to pretend to be a man or to be ‘king’.
Drag kings today have adopted this term
and have developed their
own unique form
of cabaret entertainment.
Drag kings are generally lesbian, and use theatre
to promote gender
fluidity and sexual openness.
Attitudes in Ireland towards the gay community
are in general improving
and ‘drag kings’ are one
of the latest expressions
of freedom to have
emerged from the gay community.
